iMAGE-CREATE strives for a balance between senior, mid-career, and junior faculty as well as women in leadership roles. Gender among the trainees exceeds that of the discipline, and practices to maintain equity, diversity and inclusion are implemented in the Management Structure and Recruitment Strategy.
To ensure representation of equity-seeking groups, we have reserved mobility scholarships specifically for women as well as minority and underrepresented groups.
Our partner institutions all have permanent structures to reinforce this commitment, including teacher training, equal opportunity committees, and policies to ensure the compatibility of studies, work and family. uOttawa’s actions are supported by the new Vice-Dean of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Professional Development in the Faculty of Science.
All activities of the CREATE are carried out to foster an inclusive environment in which everyone’s voice and opinion are heard. We actively encourage addition of female students and professionals to the program and raise the visibility of successful women in the discipline through guest lectures and visiting professors programs (e.g., modelled after the Women’s Executive Board of GEOMAR). We also encourage the students to develop their own goals and procedures for ensuring equity, diversity and inclusiveness.
