Derry & Gross Medal Winners Webinar 2024
The Mineral Deposits Division is excited to invite you to the upcoming Derry & Gross Webinar on November 5th, 2024. Join us to hear from this year’s winners, Professor Keiko Hattori (Duncan Derry Medal Winner), and Professor Crystal Laflamme (William Harvey Gross Medal Winner). Dr. Hattori will be presenting on “High-grade epithermal gold deposits: Potential areas in Canada and beyond.” Dr. Laflamme’s talk is titled “Towards linking the timing, fluid sources, and mineralizing controls in magmatic-hydrothermal gold systems of the southern Abitibi subprovince.”
Keiko Hattori
University of Ottawa
The 2024 Duncan R. Derry Medal is awarded to Dr. Keiko Hattori (University of Ottawa). Dr. Keiko Hattori has conducted research on a broad range of geoscience topics, including volcanology, sedimentary geochemistry, and mantle petrology and geochemistry. These studies have a common theme, understanding the geological framework for metallic mineralization. The work includes the documentation of the paleo-surface environment for uranium placer formation, the metal transport in active volcanoes, recycling of volatiles and metals to arc magmas in subduction zones, and characterization of magmas linked to porphyry copper deposits. She has published more than 170 peer-reviewed papers in numerous journals, including Nature and Science. Her work has contributed to regional exploration for uranium, porphyry copper, and epithermal gold deposits. She has served on executive councils for more than 15 organizations and professional societies, and on government panels, most recently for Canada’s Chief Science Advisor and for the European Union. Keiko has taught courses on mineral deposits, including alteration and ore petrography, as well as geochemistry at the University of Ottawa since 1983. Her open-mindedness, and her approach combining geochemical analysis and rigorous field work attracted over 90 students to her research projects. Many of them have gone into leading positions in industry, government and university. Keiko’s research has been recognized with several awards, including the Takeo Kato Gold Medal from the Japan Society of Resource Geology, and she was appointed as the International Exchange Lecturer for the Society of Economic Geologists, visiting universities throughout Asia, Europe and USA. Keiko is elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, where she now serves as Director of the Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Division, and also elected Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America.
Crystal Laflamme
Université Laval
The 2024 William Harvey Gross Award is awarded to Prof. Crystal LaFlamme (Université Laval). Dr. LaFlamme is a leading researcher, worldwide, in the field of multiple sulfur isotope geochemistry, including its application to understand precipitation of gold mineralization in orogenic gold deposits, and tracking the sulfur pathways at a crustal scale. Dr. LaFlamme has made significant contributions in the development of in situ analytical protocols to precisely measure sulfur isotope composition of sulfides by SIMS and LA-ICPMS, and these protocols are now widely used by other laboratories worldwide. This has been presented in a larger number of publications which have had an important impact in the field, as shown by ~1200 citations and a h-index of 20, well above typical values at her stage in the career. Her work has been recognized internationally by the SGA (Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits) Young Scientist Award in 2019. Dr. LaFlamme has established a well-funded research program at Université Laval where she holds a prestigious Tier II Canada Research Chair. She has been supervising a large number of graduate students (6 BSc, 4 MSc, 10 PhD, and 2 PDF) where she has instilled her passion for addressing pressing research questions using advanced analytical methods. In addition to her outstanding scientific achievements, Dr LaFlamme has involved herself in various national and international scientific conferences, including those of GAC, organizing sessions or contributing to LOC. She has been elected Councillor for the SGA (2024-2026). She has co-chaired NSERC Evaluation Committee for Discovery Grants (Geosciences), attesting to her high standing in the geoscience community.
