The first cohort of iMAGE-CREATE trainees has been launched, but we are advertising Affiliate Memberships for graduate students in related fields who wish to participate in the training opportunities offered by the program.
Opportunities, Jobs, Future Careers
iMAGE-CREATE graduates can expect to be employed in a fast-growing geoscience service sector ‒ a billion-dollar industry worldwide ‒ as well as in government laboratories, academia, exploration and mining, and the energy industry. With over 20,000 registered professional geoscientists’ positions in Canada, and many more overseas, they can expect strong placement opportunities. Our past trainees have all secured professional employment in industry (50%), government (30%) and academia (20%). Industry employers have a strong willingness to engage with iMAGE-CREATE, recognizing their future recruitment challenges.
Trainees connect with employers throughout the program in both formal and informal settings as well as in research projects (e.g., through NSERC Alliance and Mitacs Accelerate). Training in the iMAGE-CREATE also broadens employment options beyond traditional geoscience careers, with strong demand expected in areas such as resource management and security and environmental protection both in Canada (e.g., see Canada’s $1.5 billion Oceans Protection Plan) and abroad (e.g., U.N. Environmental Program). Some large technology companies (e.g., Nippon) are already seeking knowledge-transfer skills in marine mapping, a new field that has recently launched 3 new professorships at Canadian universities.
