iMAGE-CREATE Trainees Meet with Prof. Froukje M. van der Zwan of KAUST
On Monday, July 20th, members of the iMAGE-CREATE community at the University of Ottawa, including trainees/affiliates Carlos Braga, Matteo Clemente, Bettina Bourque, Sarah Daves, Chris Galley, and Tatiana Sitnikova, PIs Mark Hannington and John Jamieson, and coordinator Erin Bethell, met with Professor Froukje M. van der Zwan from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia.
Prof. van der Zwan introduced the group to her research, which, among other topics, is focused on magmatic and hydrothermal processes occurring at young rifted margins such as the Red Sea. Her work includes the first documentation of active hydrothermal venting in the Red Sea, in the form of diffuse venting and iron oxy-hydroxide mounds at the Hatiba Mons volcano.
Members of the iMAGE-CREATE group also had the opportunity to share overviews of their various research projects, ranging from high-resolution mapping of submarine volcanoes using cutting-edge sonar technology, to 3D modelling of massive sulphide deposits, to understanding the crustal architecture of 2.7 billion year-old oceanic environments.
The meeting concluded with a discussion centering on future collaborations for both research and training with Prof. van der Zwan’s group at KAUST. The iMAGE-CREATE community extends our thanks to Prof. van der Zwan for taking the time to meet, and we look forward to working together in the future.
