Cruise Objectives:
Queen Charlotte Fault Project seismic survey – (Pinar Gurun, MSc Dalhousie, R/V Marcus Langseth), R/V Marcus Langseth ocean bottom seismometer deployment, Scripps Insitute of Oceanography, Transform Obliquity Earthquake Study (TOQUES), Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, 10 days at sea, Ketchikan, Alaska – Seattle, Washington. Pinar assisted with deployments and handling of seismic data.
Rainbow hydrothermal vent field, Mid-Atlantic Ridge – (Chris Galley, PhD Memorial, R/V Meteor), R/V Meteor research cruise M176-2, GEOMAR and University of Kiel, 1 month at sea, Emden – Emden, Germany. Chris was part of the group responsible for conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) data, acoustic doppler current profile (ADCP) operations, and multibeam bathymetry.
Scotia Shelf, Atlantic Canada – (Caroline Gini, PhD Memorial, M/V Eastcom), M/V Eastcom research cruise to ground-truth InSAS data from Kraken Robotics simulated aperture sonar, M/V Eastcom, Memorial University, 6 days at sea, St. John’s – St. John’s, Canada. Caroline helped to develop onboard and post-cruise processing workflow and evaluated the technology for geological mapping.
Trans-Pacific GEOTRACES oceanographic survey, RV Sonne research cruise SO289, GEOMAR and University of Kiel, 48 days at sea, Valparaiso, Chile – Noumea, New Caledonia. Sarah sampled the water colum to determine distributions, sources and sinks of trace elements and their isotopes in one of the least studied ocean regions on Earth.
Trans-Pacific GEOTRACES oceanographic survey, RV Sonne research cruise SO289, GEOMAR and University of Kiel, 48 days at sea, Valparaiso, Chile – Noumea, New Caledonia. Chris was part of the ship’s physical oceanography/geology team responsible for seabed mapping.
Mid-Atlantic ridge drilling using the Rockdrill 2 and sampling of core complexes, R/V James Cook research cruise Project ULTRA, National Oceanographic Center and British Geological Survey, 2 months at sea, Southampton – Southampton, UK. Andrew, with CREATE co-PIs Jamieson and Petersen, participated in the drilling, mapping and sampling with HyBIS ROV.
Rainbow Massif, Mid-Atlantic Ridge, oceanic core complex, R/V Pourquoi Pas? research cruise, Claude Bernard University and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France, 1 month at sea, Ponta Delgada – Ponta Delgada, Portugal. Caroline worked on autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) operations and data acquisition and processing.
Northeast Pacific Deep-Sea Diversity Expedition, R/V Tully research cruise Pac2022-035, 21 days, Port Hardy, BC – Victoria BC, Canada. Sarah participated as shore-based scientist, assisting with seabed mapping used for coordination of dive plans.
Laurentian Fan Atlantic margin, Canada, R/V Coriolis II research cruise to recover ocean bottom seismometers. 6 days at sea, St. John’s – St. John’s, Canada. Pinar was part of the logistics team handling the recovery and data retreival from the OBS instruments.
Cascadia margin seismic survey, Vancouver Island, R/V Sonne research cruise SO294 CLOCKS, GEOMAR, 6 weeks at sea, Vancouver, Canada – San Diego, USA. Jessie managed acoustic imaging of the sediment and water column as part of the investigation of subduction earthquakes, including multibeam and Parasound in the hydroacoustics lab.
High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP) field study, Svalbard, Polarsyssel field cruise, University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), 3 days at sea, Longyearbyen – Longyearbyen, Norway. Tatiana conducted onshore field studies of HALIP volcanic rocks.
Indian Ocean mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal vents, mapping and sampling, R/V Pelagia research cruise, German Geological Survey (BGR), 6 weeks at sea, Port Louis-Port Louis, Maritius. Keaton will conduct ROV dives for mapping and sampling.

Norwegian Margin (Fabian Hampel, PhD Ottawa, IODP JR-Leg396) − International Ocean Drilling Expedition to document the history of rifting and magmatic intrusion into passive margin sediments of the Norwegian Basin.
North Atlantic Bathymetry (Rebecca Mensing, PhD Ottawa, R/V Sonne SO280) − regional oceanographic and bathymetric survey of the North Atlantic in the Iceland-Azores transect, deep Atlantic and Iceland Basin (>3,000 m).
Marianas arc-backarc (Octavio Avuna-Avendano, PhD Toronto, R/V Falkor) − mapping and sampling the origins and distribution of back-arc magmatic-hydrothermal activity in relation to geodynamic controls on basin opening.
Kings Trough, Eastern Atlantic (Marc Fassbender, PhD Ottawa; Fabian Hampel, PhD Kiel, R/V Meteor M168) − sampling of the Kings Trough and flanking seamounts, considered to be a possible fossil plate boundary and formed by extension triggered by a previously unknown mantle plume.
Grand Banks Sonar Technology (Caroline Gini, PhD Memorial, M/V Atlantic Kingfisher) − part of Kraken Robotics’ OceanVision project testing their proprietary Synthetic Aperture Sonor system
Atlantic Fracture Zones (Mary Besaw, MSc Ottawa, R/V MS Merian MSM88-2) − Leg 2 contribution to the GEBCO 2030 initiative to map 170,000 km2 of the Atlantic seafloor between Cape Verde and the 15-20 Fracture Zone, with profiling magnetometer to study magnetization of oceanic core complexes.
