Understanding offshore earthquakes and potential risks
September 13, 2022: Vancouver. Being able to better assess the risk of future earthquakes in the Cascadia region off the Pacific coast – that is the goal of the CLOCKS expedition, which started on September 13 in Vancouver with the German research vessel SONNE and is headed by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel. The expedition (SO-294) will conduct seismic surveys to investigate diverse topics from earthquake generation to the possibility of storing carbon dioxide in basalt layers of the Cascadia Basin.
