On November 29th at 17:00 UTC (local 09:00 PST) CoSV will host its final webinar of 2022 entitled:
“Assessment of the Physical Properties of the Umbrella Clouds associated with Submarine Eruptions”.
This webinar will be delivered by Dr. Ashok Kumar Gupta, from UCLA and Vanderbilt University, USA. You can register below.
Short abstract:
In this seminar, I will talk about the spatial and temporal distribution of umbrella clouds, their compositions, and the longevity associated with two prominent submarine explosive eruptions, Fukutoku-Oka-no-Ba (Fauria et. al., 2022) and Hunga-Tonga Hunga Ha’apai (Gupta et. al., 2022) eruptions during 2021-2022. I will present how the image segmentation and histogram technique can better extract volcanic clouds and exclude non-volcanic clouds near the eruption site. The extracted umbrella clouds and associated umbrella top brightness temperature are then used to ascertain the umbrella top height using the real-time temperature profile after ensuring that the umbrella is optically thick and in thermal equilibrium with the environment. Moreover, the dominant composition of the umbrella clouds is also obtained using multi-channel geostationary satellite observations.
