“A new geological map of the Lau Basin (SW Pacific Ocean) reveals crustal growth processes in arc-backarc systems”
A new peer-reviewed article has been published in Geosphere, an open-access, online-only journal hosted by the Geological Society of America (GSA).
This article was the product of several iMAGE-CREATE members and affiliates, including principal investigators Dr. Margaret Stewart, Dr. Mark Hannington, Dr. Melissa Anderson, and HQP/PhD. Candidates Rebecca Mensing and Marc Fassbender. It highlights the production of a new 1:1,000,000 lithostratigraphic map of the Lau Basin, which is the type-example of an active back-arc basin, located in the SW Pacific Ocean. The map provides the core foundation for understanding the geological evolution and makeup of active and/or ancient back-arc basins and introduces a novel method for mapping the geology of the seafloor.
The article can be accessed here (DOI:10.1130/GES02340.1), on the GeoScienceWorld website. To see a list of all other publications produced by iMAGE-CREATE members, see the publications section of the website.
