Ancient and Modern Volcanic-hosted Massive Sulfide Deposits
Date: Friday, February 28, 2025
Time: 8:50am – 4:30pm EST (UTC-5)
Location: Royal Ontario Museum | Toronto, ON, Canada
Presenter: J. Bruce Gemmell
Format: In-person workshop consisting of dynamic lectures supplemented with generous lab time for investigating unique hand specimens from the Royal Ontario Museum’s Kirwin Collection.
Description
This one-day workshop is designed for exploration geologists and will include an overview of the geology, genesis, and exploration for volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits. Topics to be covered include general features, classification schemes, tectonic setting, mineralogy and textures, metal zoning, and ore equivalent horizons. The characteristics and diagnostic features of seafloor and sub-seafloor genetic models will be reviewed. The mineralogy, assemblages and zoning and geochemistry of hydrothermal alteration will be discussed, as well as exploration techniques and strategies for VHMS deposits. The workshop will end with an examination of modern seafloor mineralizing hydrothermal systems and a comparison of these to ancient VHMS deposits.
The workshop format comprises a series of lectures, where ore genesis and application to mineral exploration will be emphasized. This will be supplemented by generous laboratory time for reviewing and interpreting multiple suites of remarkable VHMS hand specimens at the Royal Ontario Museum’s mineral classroom.
This offering is directed towards economic geology graduate students and professionals working within the exploration industry who wish to have a greater understanding of the geology, genesis, and exploration strategies for volcanic-hosted massive sulfide systems.
