Expedition Report: Exploring hydrothermal activity around Santorini and Kolumbo
On March 3rd, iMAGE-CREATE coordinator Dr. Erin Bethell, principal investigator Dr. John Jamieson, and trainee Jennifer Spalding set sail from the port of Heraklion, Greece, aboard the RRS Discovery (National Oceanography Centre (NOC)) to begin expedition “HYDROMOX”. The expedition, which is focused on understanding hydrothermal modulation of caldera explosivity, will collect data and samples around the Santorini caldera and Kolumbo submarine volcano.
The expedition’s operations include deploying geophysical instruments on the seafloor (ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) and ocean bottom electromagnetic systems (OBEM)), sampling sediments via gravity coring, and collecting rock, fluid, and sediment samples using the RRS Discovery’s remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Isis.
